Heirs Of God

The Spirit Himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God, and if children, then heirs – heirs of God and joint heirs with Christ, if indeed we suffer with Him, that we may also be glorified together.
Romans 8:16 & 17
Who are we and who are our people? It is important for anyone to know this. Whether we speak of people in a cultural, national, or spiritual context, it is important for them to know who they are and who their people are. For those who are in Christ, our text articulates this in clear terms. Who are we? We are the children of God. We cannot exalt ourselves by saying so, but we can testify that God has done or a work of grace to make us His children. Our people are also the children of God. We encounter them in every context of life. We find them in our community, at work, and within the groups with whom we gather for worship. These who are our people share with us the status of being the heirs of God. Beyond that we are joint heirs with Christ. Christ is the central Person Who binds us all together. We are His Bride, His Body, and His Church. All the redeemed of all ages are His people and are therefore our people. We are the children of God and so are they. This gives us a clear understanding of who we are.
Our Gracious Father and our God,
we rejoice that You have made us Your children.
We praise You that You will gather us together
with the great multitude that no one can number.
