Scripture: Matthew 11:16-19

But whereunto shall I liken this generation? It is like unto children sitting in the markets and calling unto their fellows, and saying, we have piped unto you, and ye have not danced; we have mourned unto you, and ye have not lamented. For John came neither eating nor drinking, and they say, He hath a devil. The Son of man came eating and drinking, and they say, Behold a man gluttonous, and a winebibber, a friend of publicans and sinners. But wisdom is justified of her children.

Sermon: Security in Christ’s Wisdom
Daniel Lowe

  1. Christ’s wisdom is justified as it exposes an evil generation.
  2. Christ’s wisdom is justified as it is explained in a simple parable.
  3. Christ’s wisdom is displayed by real life examples.

Catechism: Westminster Shorter Catechism Question #66

What is the reason annexed in the fifth commandment?

The reason annexed to the fifth commandment is, a promise of long life and prosperity (as far as it shall serve for God’s glory and their own good) to all such as keep this commandment.

Exodus 20:12 Honor thy father and thy mother: that thy days may be long upon the land which the LORD thy God giveth thee. Deuteronomy 5:16 Honor thy father and thy mother, as the LORD thy God hath commanded thee; that thy days may be prolonged, and that it may go well with thee, in the land which the LORD thy God giveth thee. Ephesians 6:2-3 Honor thy father and mother; which is the first commandment with promise; that it may be well with thee, and thou mayest live long on the earth.

The Son of man came eating and drinking, and they say, Behold a man gluttonous, and a winebibber, a friend of publicans and sinners. But wisdom is justified of her children.

Matthew 11:19

As Christ concludes His remarks regarding the fault-finding generation who criticized His choice of friends, He remarks, ‘But wisdom is justified by her children.’ Here is Christ’s Divine Postscript to His commentary upon hypocrites and their hypocrisy. In short, what He is saying is, that spiritually wise people will see the wisdom of His actions. As we said before, Christ declared that He came to call sinners to repentance. He boldly declared that He did not come to call the self-righteous. To whom then does Christ show Himself to be a Friend?’ Christ is the Friend of the broken. He is the Friend of the weak and helpless soul who sits apart in darkness and in isolation. Christ is the Friend of the desolate, the poor, and the unable. This is the behavior which the self-righteous finds so abhorrent, to which Christ responds, ‘wisdom is justified by her children.’ The spiritually wise person sees the wisdom of Christ’s actions. Christ will seek out that isolated soul and be its’ Great Companion. Christ will enable the unable. Christ will be the Light for the one who sits in darkness. Christ will be the wealth of the impoverished soul. Christ knows best how to minister to all these ‘publicans and sinners.’ He transforms us into ‘kings and priests,’ and ‘wisdom is justified by her children.’  The wisdom of God is wisdom enough.

Our most Holy and Wise God,
we praise You that You do all things well.
We rejoice today that You are ever Good,
Kind and Gracious to those of us who are of low estate.

An Indisputable Fact

An Indisputable Fact

An Indisputable Fact

The Son of man came eating and drinking, and they say, Behold a man gluttonous, and a winebibber, a friend of publicans and sinners. But wisdom is justified of her children.

Matthew 11:19

What was an accusation in the mouth of Christ’s enemies, was also an indisputable fact in the light of the evidence. Christ Himself said that He did not come to call the self-righteous. To whom was Christ a Friend? He was a Friend to the poor couple whose wedding was overshadowed by lack of wine. He was a Friend to the woman at the well, whose life was full of immorality. He was a Friend to the lame man at the pool of Bethesda. He was a Friend to the woman taken in adultery. He was a Friend to the man who was born blind. On every occasion, we see Christ demonstrating the characteristics and qualities of a True Friend. Whether He turned water into wine, turned a woman of the streets into a woman of faith; turned a lame man into a walking man; turned a condemned woman into a free woman; or turned a blind man into a seeing man; in every case, Christ was the ‘Friend in need,’ of all of these wretched people. What was, in the mouth of His enemies a bitter accusation, was, in the light of the evidence, an indisputable, glorious fact. Here is true friendship. Here is the epitome of what it means to, ‘condescend to men of low estate.’ Christ embraced these ‘publicans and sinners,’ at their point of need. This is a glorious, uplifting, encouraging fact. If He was their Friend, what joy it brings that He is our Friend as well.  This is the glorious, indisputable fact with which we may face this day and every day.

Our Loving Master and Our Friend,
we are so grateful for Your never-failing Loyalty.
We are overwhelmed that You are our Friend,
‘that sticks closer than a brother.’

A Bitter Accusation

A Bitter Accusation

A Bitter Accusation

The Son of man came eating and drinking, and they say, Behold a man gluttonous, and a winebibber, a friend of publicans and sinners. But wisdom is justified of her children.

Matthew 11:19

Friendship is a serious matter. We have many acquaintances, but few friends. A friend is that person who knows you well, and loves you for who you are, not for what you can do for them. The Scripture presents Christ as the Greatest of Friends. His enemies did not like His choice of friends. Our text today states, ‘The Son of man came eating and drinking, and they say, Behold a man gluttonous, and a winebibber, a friend of publicans and sinners. But wisdom is justified of her children.’ Let us consider the line, ‘a friend of publicans and sinners.’ In the mouth of Christ’s enemies, this was a bitter accusation. Why did they employ this as an insult? Really, this accusation says much more about them than it does about Christ. It brings into stark contrast the love and compassion of Christ against hypocrisy and vain religion. Christ loved the broken. They despised the broken. Christ humbly helped the weak. They ridiculed the weak. Christ lifted up the fallen. They stepped upon the head of the fallen in order to elevate themselves. Christ gave hope to the hopeless. They removed hope by asserting that these ‘publicans and sinners’ would never be able to achieve the high moral standard to which these accusers believed that they had attained. Christ demonstrated Grace, while these hypocrites  demonstrated self-righteous arrogance. Christ loved the unlovely, while these showed that their unloveliness was the fruit of self-deception and hypocrisy. Christ just continued to be the ‘friend of publicans and sinners,’ regardless of His enemies’ accusations. That makes us glad.  The same Christ, Who was the friend of ‘publicans and sinners,’ is our Great Friend as well.

Our Wonderful Savior and our Friend,
we praise You with great joy and thanksgiving,
that You do not despise us for our lowliness.
We rejoice that You are our friend,
and are not ashamed to claim us.
