Christ, Our Strong Redeemer

Their Redeemer is strong; The Lord of hosts is His name. He will thoroughly plead their case, That He may give rest to the land, And disquiet the inhabitants of Babylon.

Jeremiah 50:34

The evangelical statements of the ancient prophets are a joy for the New Testament Saint.  Jeremiah peals forth a triumphant note regarding what God is to His people.  We ought not see this as anything else but a direct reference to Christ.  Christ is Our Strong Redeemer.  He is a Savior strong in love, or else He would not have adventured Himself so greatly on our behalf.  He is strong in words, for ‘Never man spake like this man.’  He is strong in works as well, being ‘Mighty in deed and word.’  As the Champion of our cause He will be successful, because having undertaken to act for us He will ‘thoroughly plead.’

As One who has never failed in any endeavor, Who cannot fail, and Who will never give up, Christ will complete His work on our behalf, by it ‘bringing many sons to glory.’  That Christ’s work for us shall be in such a manner brought to completion means that for us He is a Secure Shelter.  He knows our need of spiritual rest, and knows how to give us that rest.  He promises rest unto us and has historically delivered that rest unto all who have come to Him.  Part of the reason that we can rest so confidently in Christ as our All-sufficient Redeemer is that He is the Supreme Conqueror of our enemies.  He ‘disquiets the inhabitants of Babylon.’  Nothing escapes His all-seeing eye.  No thought or deed escapes His knowledge.  No criminal oppressor shall escape His sword, and no injustice shall go unavenged.  Who is a God like Our God, and Who is a Strong Redeemer like Christ?  Let us spend our day basking in the comfort and security of Christ, Our Strong Redeemer.

Oh Christ, Our Strong Redeemer,

we rest by faith on Thee today

and rejoice that Thou shalt

‘thoroughly plead our cause.’
