Our Chosen Inheritance
Our Chosen Inheritance
He will choose our inheritance for us, The excellence of Jacob whom He loves.
Psalm 47:4
When we do not know what is best for us, it is good to have someone wiser choose for us. If we are certain about the wisdom of the chooser and of his or her goodwill toward us, then we can with confidence anticipate the good result of his selection. Our text states that God, Whom the Scripture declares has chosen us to be His children, shall also choose for us that which we will inherit from Him. It is a matter of wonder and joy for us that God did choose us in Christ ‘before the foundation of the world.’ We would not be able to speak of His choosing our inheritance for us if He were not ‘Our Father, which art in heaven;’ rather, we would be facing Him as ‘the Judge of all the earth.’
That He is Our Father means that we at least have a future and that that future involves an inheritance. Our text describes this inheritance as ‘chosen.’ Because it is Our Heavenly Father who does the choosing, we may be certain that He knows what is best for us to have. Therefore, this choosing is with infinite wisdom. Because of the familial relationship which we enjoy with Him it is a choosing with unfailing love. Because it is the eternal God who chooses for us to whom He has granted eternal life, it is therefore an eternal inheritance. Because He owns ‘the cattle upon a thousand hills,’ it must be an inheritance of unparalleled wealth. Inasmuch as ‘Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and cometh down from the Father of lights,’ this inheritance must be for our greatest good, and exactly suited to meet our situation. We may be paupers to the world, but we are princes and princesses to the King. We may have almost nothing here, but we have everything there. What is more, we will not fail to receive our inheritance ‘for He is faithful that promised.’ Rejoice today, child of God, for you have a God-chosen inheritance!
Our Great and Gracious God,
You are a Good Father,
Wise and generous in all Your ways.
Thank You for Your faithful promise!
