Our Present Peaceful Possession
Our Present Peaceful Possession
Therefore, having been justified by faith, we have a peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ.
Romans 5:1
It is always good to know where you stand with people. With some folk you can never feel quite certain, because what appears to be a frank and open relationship is nothing of the kind. Thankfully for us in our relationship with God through Christ, there is no uncertainty. According to our text, ‘being justified by faith, we have peace with God.’ I liken this to our entering in to possess a house. The Door through which we have entered is Christ Himself. So He describes Himself, and so we have found Him to be, the Way whereby we came to God. The ‘key’ which we have used is the one which God Himself has given us. It is the ‘key’ of faith. If we had no faith, then we could not please God, according to Hebrews 11:6. With faith, however, we pass through the Portal into a new position. The position which we now occupy is that of ‘ being justified.’ What no amount of self-righteous labor could accomplish, justifying grace has enacted. No more for us the agonizing, fearful wearying pursuit of self-justification. ‘Jehovah Tisdkenu,’ the LORD our righteousness, is our motto now. We have a new position, and that new position means that we enjoy a new possession. ‘We have peace with God.’ What? Peace with Him to Whom we had made ourselves so odious? Peace with that One Whom we so long scorned and slighted? Yes, peace, and that for good. Our peace with God cannot be broken unless His justifying grace fails, and that it cannot do. What a blessed position in which to be! What a reassuring possession to have!
Great God of Wonders,
we praise Thee today
that Thou art the God
of justifying grace
and that we have peace
with Thee.
