Christ, A Friend For All Seasons

A friend loves at all times, And a brother is born for adversity.

Proverbs 17:17

Friendship is serious business. In life, we will have a host of acquaintances; we will have a smaller circle of ‘friends’ in the same vein as what the Australians call, ‘mates;’ more than an acquaintance, yet not of the inner circle. We will have one or perhaps two ‘friends’ of the type in our text this morning. Our text declares, ‘A friend loves at all times.’ Of all the friends we may ever have, only one or two will be of this variety, and One will rise far above the others. Christ is the Greatest of all our friends, and He loves us at all times. No other friend ever loved you before you were even born. No other friend ever loved you, with the full knowledge of your whole constitution. No other friend has ever loved you, knowing the dark thoughts of which you are capable, and the dark deeds in which you have engaged. No one else has loved you enough to leave comfort and adoration, to suffer humiliation, opposition, and a cruel death to redeem your life from destruction. No other friend has loved you enough to speak perpetually on your behalf to the very God of Heaven. No other friend has spent two thousand years doing the interior decorating in the place that He is ‘preparing for you’ to dwell forevermore with Him. No other friend loves you, not just for time, but for all eternity. ‘Jesus, what a friend for sinners.’ Rejoice today, Child of God, in this Christ, the friend who loves at all times.
