The Divine Source of Life

For as the Father has life in Himself, so He has granted the Son to have life in Himself,

John 5:26

Between Christ and His Father there is an utterly unique relationship. This relationship, as Christ explained it, inflamed the anger of the self-righteous. In our text for today Christ makes a fascinating remark. He says, ‘For as the Father has life in Himself, so He has granted the Son to have life in Himself.’  God is Himself life, and the Divine Source of Life for all. Inasmuch as Christ, being God, ‘took unto Himself a true body and a reasonable soul,’ His ‘life,’ in that sense, comes from the Father. That life, which Christ has, transcends death, not just in His case alone,  but also in the case of all of us to whom He gives life. Because He rose from the dead, and we are indissolubly connected to Him, we shall rise also. He is able to confer His life upon others. He said, ‘I give unto them eternal life and they shall never perish.’ God the Father, has granted the Son to have life, and the Son has conferred life upon us. That life is abundant. Christ said, ‘I am come that they might have life and that they might have it more abundantly.’ It is life that steadily improves, not in time, as apparently as in eternity. Our life comes from Christ. His life comes from His Father. By this, we are inextricably tied to the God of the Universe. From Him, no one can sever us. Here is a great thought with which to meet this or any other day.

Our Great God,
we rejoice that You are the Lord of Life;
that Christ lives and that by Him,
we live also!
