Neither Chariots Nor Horses

Some trust in chariots, and some in horses; But we will remember the name of the LORD our God.

Psalm 20:7

David was a warrior. He engaged in military activity almost all his life. When he defeated Goliath he was very young. At one point, he lived by His sword. When we become accustomed to living a certain way, we often place our confidence in those familiar things. The soldier trusts his weapons; the tradesman trusts his tools; the investor trusts his investments. David understood that inclination. While he himself made use of these lesser means, he makes it clear in our text today, that he placed his trust in the Lord above all else. ‘Some trust in chariots, and some in horses, but we will remember the Name of the Lord our God.’

Confidence in lesser things is always mis-placed. They have their purpose, and use, but Christ trumps them all. Here is the reason why.  On many occasions, we see seemingly impossible occurrences on behalf of the people of God. We see the dry path through the Red Sea; the shut mouths of lions; the ineffective furnace of Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego; all which stand as eloquent testimony, that Christ does great things for His people who trust Him instead of the lesser means. How many of us can testify that we have seen unparalleled interventions in our own experiences? We have seen Christ act on our behalf when all other means would have failed. We have learned by blessed experience, that Christ is a far better place to place our trust than, ‘chariots and horses.’

Our Valiant, Powerful, Loving Savior,
We are utterly confident in You,
And in all You are doing in us and on our behalf.
