Granting Our Hearts’ Desire
Granting Our Hearts’ Desire
May He grant you according to your heart’s desire, And fulfill all your purpose.
Psalm 20:4
If you could have anything you desired, for what would you ask? This is, in some respects, a two-edged question. By answering it truthfully, we say much about ourselves. Our text today is a petition, a blessing, and an expression of hope by David for others. He says, ‘May He grant you according to your heart’s desire.’
So what is my ‘heart’s desire?’ There are high and holy desires, and there are desires which are much more pedestrian, and significantly less worthy. Perhaps the first thought when considering this statement should be, ‘I do not rightly know what is wisest and best for my heart to desire.’ Christ my Savior does know. Therefore, before I ask for anything more, I should ask that He would bring my heart to desire the things that He wants for me. My natural heart desires and His Holy heart desires for me, may very well be diametrically opposed. As He conforms my heart to His Great Heart, my desires will change until my will is for His will to hold sway; my purpose is that His purpose prevail; and my desires are the reflection of His desires for me. Then would come to pass, in blessed fashion, David’s statement, ‘May He grant you according to Your heart’s desire.’ Look to Christ today, Child of God, that He will kindle in you holy desires, and then grant you every one of them, unto the full satisfaction of your soul.
Our Loving Savior,
Fill our hearts today with truly holy desires,
And then grant them every one.
