Bear Them Up Forever

Save Your people, And bless Your inheritance; Shepherd them also, And bear them up forever.

Psalm 28:9

Christ is the Never-Failing, Upholder of His People. Our text today is the heartfelt petition of the beleaguered Saint, not only for himself, but for all the people of God. It is a petition that has already been, is being, and shall yet be answered. How much we owe to Christ’s bearing us up.  He bore us up when we were enamored in a ‘fearful pit,’ and in ‘the miry clay.’ He bears us up when we are beset by ravenous wolves who pass themselves off as sheep of the flock. He bears us up when we are engaged in any endeavor to glorify Him. He bears us up when sore trials and afflictions weigh us down. He bears us up in the challenges we face in family, in work, in society, and in our labor to advance His Kingdom. He bears us up at home and abroad. He bears us up by the power of His Almighty Hand, by the strength of His Holy Spirit, by the promises of His Holy Word, and by the support of His Elect people. He bears us up in time and will bear us up into eternity.  The way you will pass today will be far too hard for you to traverse without the bearing up of your All-Sufficient Savior. Those around you, for whom your heart bleeds with compassion, are in need of this bearing up. Let this petition be your petition, for yourself and for them.  Oh Christ, bear me and them up today, and forever. And all the people of God said, ‘Amen,’ and shouted, ‘Hallelujah!

O, Good, Great, and Chief Shepherd,
Bear us up, as only You can.
We depend upon you utterly and completely.
