Dwelling in the Lord’s House Forever

Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life; And I will dwell in the house of the Lord forever.

Psalm 23:6

This life binds us to earth. The preoccupations of it fill our vision much of the time.  It is good for us to consciously raise our eyes to our final destination. Our text for today provides us with such an opportunity. ‘I will dwell in the house of the Lord, forever.’ Behold the evangelical apprehension of this ancient Saint; how his words transport our thoughts to the opening lines of John 14. Christ will never be satisfied until all of us for whom He lived, and died, and rose again are together with Him. For these intervening years, while His providential plan proceeds, He is preparing the dwelling places for us who are the heirs of salvation.

‘I will dwell in the house of the Lord, forever.’  What a prospect; to see Christ in all His Beauty; to hear with my own ears the gracious words that proceed out of His mouth; to behold His face in righteousness without the distractions of a sinful heart, and a feeble body.  This alone will be the heaven that I have so desired. More than this, there is the prospect that this is forever. Everything around me is temporal. Everything comes to an end. Dwelling in the house of the Lord is ‘forever.’ Our eternal soul longs for eternal fellowship with Christ. We will never be fully satisfied with less. This is your final destination, Saint of God. This is where you are going, because Your Shepherd is leading you there. Rejoice today, in the prospect of dwelling in the house of the Lord, forever.
