You Anoint My Head with Oil
You Anoint My Head with Oil
You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies; You anoint my head with oil; My cup runs over.
Psalm 23:5
There is no end to the blessings which Christ bestows upon us, the people to whom He is the Good, Great, and Chief Shepherd. Buried in the heart of the 23rd Psalm we find the words of our text today, ‘You anoint my head with oil.’ This small phrase has wide implications when we consider it in the Old Testament context. Three types of people were anointed with oil in the Old Testament; prophets, priests, and kings. Christ, Our Great Shepherd, so anoints His people. Here is one of the glorious benefits of salvation; Christ ‘anoints our head with oil.’ He elevates our status by virtue of His Person, His Work, and His Divine Right. By His anointing of us, Christ has made us ‘unto our God kings and priests, and we shall reign on the earth.’ We, of whom the world takes little account, are members of the Royal Family of the Living God, and as priests, speak to God for others. As prophets, while we may not foretell the future in any revelatory way, we do tell forth the truth of the word of God, the ways of God, and the will of God. All these privileges, along with their associated responsibilities are ours by virtue of the fact that He ‘anoints my head with oil.’ If you have, for any reason, been lying in the dust of your own smallness, Child of God; If you have felt yourself to be of no account; take unto you this thought today, ‘He anoints my head with oil.’ Christ has elevated you high above everything you would ever naturally be. He has made you a prophet, a priest and a king, by ‘anointing your head with oil.’

Oh what a thought! That someone so sinful and useless as me is elevated so high. Thank You Lord Jesus!
