He Leads. . . . In Righteousness

He restores my soul; He leads me in the paths of righteousness For His name’s sake.

Psalm 23:3

How can I know that I am going the right direction? In human terms, we go to great lengths to determine that. We develop, for example, elaborate sets of plans to guarantee that we are going the right direction in building a building. We utilize maps and systems for validation to guarantee that we arrive at our desired destination. When we travel, there are signs of every stripe and variety to point us in the right direction. Yet, for all that, in the larger sense, we often remain uneasy on our course.

Our text for today offers us assurance regarding our direction.  Not so much in matters temporal, although it includes that, but more so in matters eternal. ‘He leads me in the paths of righteousness for His Name’s sake.’  Christ Our Shepherd is passionately engaged in seeing to it that we have good direction. As Our Shepherd, he knows the path of righteousness, for He has charted it. Moreover, He has trod the path Himself. Christ does not lead us down any path He Himself has not gone. Even better, He leads us each step of the path Himself. He does not merely send us, but, goes with us. He does all of this that we should be to the praise of His Glory. It is, ‘for His Name’s sake.’ Here is great assurance, Child of God. It is to the glory of Christ that you tread the path of righteousness. He will not let you ultimately fail, in any respect, because His Name is at stake. Therefore, He will infallibly lead you in the path of righteousness, for His Name’s sake.

Our Loving Gracious Shepherd,
We rejoice today in Your unerring Leadership.
We praise You, that You lead us.
