Christ, the Sun of Righteousness

But to you who fear My name The Sun of Righteousness shall arise with healing in His wings….

Malachi 4:2

The Old Testament begins with Christ, for ‘in the beginning was the Word… and all things were made by Him.’ The Old Testament also ends with Christ, as we see in our text today. What is even more interesting is that it ends with light and not darkness, with encouragement, and not condemnation, with hope and not fear. Our text today employs powerful imagery of Christ as ‘the Sun of Righteousness,’ Who arises ‘with healing in His wings.’ Let us spend a few minutes dwelling upon that, please. The sun is very steady and faithful. It has held its’ place for millennium. So Christ is the same ‘yesterday, today and forever.’ We change and our circumstances vary. He remains the same, and He brings us back around to see Him day after day. As the sun warms us, so Christ warms our cool hearts to be fervent in our love for Him. As the sun gives light, so Christ lightens our natural darkness and cause the shadows to flee away along with all the evil denizens who lurk there. As the sun has healing power upon those who are deficient, so Christ brings health where there was sickness and strength where there was weakness. As the sun causes the life cycle to continue, so Christ is the Giver and Sustainer of life. How often do we find ourselves sitting in the darkness, waiting for the dawn. How often have we found joy as the sun has arisen for yet another day. How much do we, as those who ‘fear Him,’ look unto Jesus, Our Sun of Righteousness, Who arises ‘with healing in His wings.’

Our Gracious Savior,
You are all our Hope.
Enable us today to bask in Your Sunlight
O Christ, Our Sun of Righteousness.
