David’s Greater Son

While the Pharisees were gathered together, Jesus asked them, saying, “What do you think about the Christ? Whose Son is He?” They said to Him,“ The Son of David.”

Matthew 22:41-42

Following upon the heels of our meditations in Ruth, it is a good time for us to hear the words of Christ as, centuries after Ruth, Boaz, Jesse, and David, He traces His earthly lineage and shows Himself to be David’s Greater Son. The opposition to Christ was mounting to nearly fever pitch. The Pharisees, in all their self-righteous, image-managing religiosity could not bear the pure testimony of Christ, ‘the Way, the Truth, and the Life.’ In the midst of that controversy, He challenges them with His Identity, He asks, “What do you think about the Christ? Whose Son is He?” They admit that He is the ‘Son of David.’ Christ goes on to challenge them with a quotation from Psalm 110, where David calls the Christ, ‘Lord.’ They could not answer how Christ could be, both Davids’ Son at the same time, David’s Lord. Christ left them in their hardness and unbelief. He does nothing to resolve their unbelieving dilemma. Having said that, Christ asks, what must be the great personal question for every soul, ‘What do you think of Christ?’ We write these devotional articles day after day, and week after week with but one purpose, to point you to Christ. It is our sincere desire that, as the result of reading this little volume, you will have great thoughts of Christ. If you do not as yet, know Him, we want you to embrace Him, as he is freely offered in the Gospel. If you know Him already, we desire that every day you will find your heart drawn out after Him more fully. If you believe, evermore seek to see Christ and to be where He is.  He will never disappoint.

to trust You with all our hearts,
and lead us forever to where you are.
