Upholding All Things by His Word

(Christ) Who being the brightness of His glory and the express image of His person, and upholding all things by the word of His power, when He had by Himself purged our sins, sat down at the right hand of the Majesty on high.

Hebrews 1:3

There is nothing else in heaven, earth or hell, quite like the Word of the Living Christ. We have read the Scriptures and there we have beheld and marveled at ‘the gracious words that proceeded out of His mouth.’ We have seen Him as He ‘spoke as One having authority, and not as the scribes.’ Looking at Him, in the larger context, with the whole universe at His Feet, we hear the words of our text today, ‘and upholding all things by the word of His power.’ What a broad statement. At the Word of Christ, kingdoms rise, and civilizations advance. At the Word of Christ, whole galaxies hang together, and worlds keep their appointed courses. At the Word of Christ, the things which are nothing, bring to nothing the things which are. The Word of Christ is the evidence of His Sovereign Rulership. In the most powerful way in which it may be, what Christ says…goes. ‘He is before all things, and by Him all things consist,’ or ‘hang together.’ How much confidence does this give us in Him today, and every day. His ‘counsel shall stand, He will do all His pleasure.’ When we see the wicked prosper; when fear is on every side; then, it is a wonderfully calming thought to know that Christ is fully in control, and is ‘upholding all things by the word of His power.’ Here is confidence with which to face the day. Christ’s Word; Christ’s Will; Christ’s Way, forever.

Gracious Savior we have full confidence in You,
Your power, and Your Word.
We are privileged to know You,
and to be confident in Your decisions.
