Christ, All There Is To See
Christ, All There Is To See
(Christ) Who being the brightness of His glory and the express image of His person, and upholding all things by the word of His power, when He had by Himself purged our sins, sat down at the right hand of the Majesty on high,
Hebrews 1:3
Christ said to the woman at the well, ‘God is a Spirit.’ He said to Philip, “He who has seen me has seen the Father.” Taken together, how should we understand these two statements, which are both from the mouth of Christ? Our text today does so gloriously. Speaking of Christ, in relation to His Father it declares, ‘Who being the brightness of His glory and the express image of His person, and upholding all things by the word of His power, when He had by Himself purged our sins, sat down at the right hand of the Majesty on high.’ In short, Christ is all there is to see of God. Wrap a thousand suns together, robe them in human flesh, and they could not rival the Glory of God in the Person of Christ. Take all the virtues conceivable, and magnify those virtues to the nth degree, and they would not come close to the Virtue of Christ, Who is the ‘express image’ of the Triune God. No wonder then, that we make so much of Christ. How can we do anything less? God has placed Christ on display, first by His Humiliation, wherein He proves Himself as the Only Redeemer of God’s Elect. Moreover, God has placed Him on display in His Exaltation, wherein He shows Christ to be the Ruler, before Whom ‘every knee shall bow, and every tongue confess, that Jesus Christ is Lord.’ Christ is all there is for us to see of God. To that purpose, then, we are committed; to make much of Christ. In doing that, we glorify God, Who shows us all He should have us see of Himself in Christ, Who is, ‘The brightness of His Glory, and the express image of His Person.’ Look to Christ today, for in Him, You shall see God.
Gracious Savior, we see You,
and would ever see more of You.
We rejoice in You, the Express Image of God.
