A Call to Close Communion
A Call To Close Communion
Oh, taste and see that the Lord is good; Blessed is the man who trusts in Him!
Psalm 34:8
Nothing else delights our palates quite as much as the taste of our favorite dish. That first bite enlightens our eyes and elicits from us exclamations of joy. Our immediate inclination is to exclaim to our near and dear friends, ‘Oh, you have to try some of this!’ so it is with our text. We considered yesterday David’s invitation to others to, ‘taste and see that the Lord is good.’ As we consider that same text again today, we come to think upon the implications of that invitation. To what exactly does David invite us? In Christological terms, he invites us to close communion with Christ. What happens when we ‘taste and see?’ So much of taste involves smell. When we ‘taste and see that the Lord is good,’ we inhale the very fragrance of heaven. We enjoy the sweet perfume of the Rose of Sharon, and the fragrance of the Lily of the Valley, intoxicates us. Also, there is the melting in our mouth of the honey-like manna of ‘the Bread of Heaven.’ Here is a taste that satisfies us in the deepest reaches of our soul. We can, ‘eat of this Bread’ and ‘drink of this cup,’ for more than a lifetime. Nothing else satisfies us as much as our continual feasting upon Christ. ‘His fruit is sweet to our taste.’ Today, Child of Grace, feed upon Christ. Fill your mouth with ‘a feast of fat things.’ Find in Christ the satisfaction which can only come from Him, ‘O taste and see that the Lord is good.’
Our Soul-Satisfying Christ,
ever give us more of Yourself.
We live upon You, O, Bread of Heaven.
