The Invitation of a Delivered Soul

The Invitation of the Delivered Soul

Oh, taste and see that the Lord is good; Blessed is the man who trusts in Him!

Psalm 34:8

David lived a life full of exceptional deliverances. God delivered him out of the mouth of the lion, and from the paw of the bear. He delivered him from the prowess of Goliath. He delivered him from the hands of Saul, the King, who sought to murder him. In the passage surrounding our text today David, writing under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit, makes reference to his deliverance from Abimelech, one of the lords of the Philistines. As he celebrates this deliverance, he extends this invitation to others, ‘Oh, taste and see that the Lord is good; Blessed is the man who trusts in Him!’ How may we consider this, especially in Christological terms? There is an old description of evangelism that sets it forth as, ‘one begger telling another begger where he found bread.’ So it is with us. Once we have tasted of Christ, we find satisfaction of soul. As we lift up our eyes, we look around us and lo, there are starving beggars on every hand. Our hearts fill with the compassion which the Holy Spirit generates in us. We ‘begin to cry out to those around us. ‘I have found bread!’ ‘Here is food for the soul!’ The satisfaction which Christ produces in us is so filling that we find ourselves sharing the overflow with others. We say with David, ‘O taste and see that the Lord is good!’ As we find ourselves satisfied, and continue to look to Christ, we imbibe from Him, a heart-felt compassion for others who are starving. We find ourselves compelled to issue this gracious invitation. We echo the words of the Psalmist, ‘O taste and see that the Lord is good!’

Our Gracious Master and Our God,
we rejoice that You are the Bread of Heaven;
that You satisfy our souls; that Your mercies are new every morning;
and that Your Faithfulness is great.
