Gazing Into the Eyes of Christ
Gazing Into the Eyes of Christ
And when he had given thanks, he brake it, and said, Take, eat: this is my body, which is broken for you: this do in remembrance of me.
I Corinthians 11:24
We want to draw a careful distinction between love for Christ and merely the love of what He can do for us. As one preacher used to put it, there is what we might call, ‘love of the table more than the love of the host.’ While it is true that Christ does wonderful things for us, we ought to be more enraptured with His Person than with His Provision. Allow us please, to return to our illustration which has borne us through the past two days. As our hero leaves his lover, with his hand under her trembling chin, he holds her gaze, looks deeply into her eyes and says, ‘Please remember me. Remember me.’ Christ says, ‘This do, in remembrance of me.’ If we are to remember Christ, how shall we remember Him? We will remember Him in Eternity, when He held unbroken communion with His Father, and with the Holy Spirit. We will remember Him in History, as He appeared as Melchizedek; as the burning bush; as the Captain of the Lord’s Hosts; as the Angel of Jehovah; and as the Son of God. We will remember Him in His Humility, as the Babe in the manger; the Child in the temple; the Healer of the sick; the Raiser of the dead; and the Preacher of Righteousness. We will remember Him at Calvary, as He ‘poured out His soul unto death,’ and ‘made His soul an offering for sin.’ We will, moreover, remember Him in Glory, for ‘God has highly exalted Him, and given Him a Name that is above every name,’ and ‘every knee shall bow, and every tongue, confess that Jesus Christ is Lord.’ Until we see Him, we will, as He has said, ‘Do this in remembrance of Me.’
“Dear Dying Lamb, Thy Precious Blood, shall never lose its power.
And all the ransom Church of God be saved to sin no more.”
Until that glorious day, we shall, with joy, remember You.
