These things I have spoken unto you, that in me ye might have peace. In the world ye shall have tribulation: but be of good cheer; I have overcome the world.

John 16:33

On the night before Christ went to the cross. He had important things to say to His disciples.  He told them hard things about His sufferings, about their reactions, and about the meaning of it all. As He concluded His remarks, just before His High Priestly Prayer, He makes the remark which serves as our text for today. ‘I have overcome the world.’ Here is a word of hope for all saints in all circumstances under all conditions for all time. We are in Christ, and Christ has ‘overcome the world.’ How can we see that this is so? He overcame the world’s breaking of the Law of God by His Perfect Life. He satisfied the world’s debt to the Law of God by His Atoning Death. He overcame the death that is in the world by His resurrection. He overcomes the rulers of the world by His exaltation as King of Kings and Lord of Lords. He overcomes the religions of the world by being the Great High Priest. He overcomes the degeneracy of the world by making ‘all things new.’ He shall overcome the injustice of the world by sitting upon the ‘Throne of His Glory.’  There is not one element of resistance to Christ that He shall not ultimately sweep away. Before Christ embraced the cruel death of the cross; before He endured the shame and spitting; before He faced the insults and the calumny; Christ declared unequivocally, ‘I have overcome the world.’ This is the great confidence which we, the people of God enjoy. Christ, Our Living Head, has ‘overcome the world.’ Because we are in Him, His victory guarantees our victory.

Our most Glorious and Victorious Christ,
we rejoice that unto You every knee shall bow,
and every tongue confess,
that You are Lord alone.
