Let Us Come Boldly
Let Us Come Boldly
Let us therefore come boldly to the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy and find grace to help in time of need.
Hebrews 4:16
Why is what Christ is doing now important to us? We have considered in the last two days, where Christ is now, and what He is doing. Today, we come to consider the practical effect of His perpetual Intercession at the Throne of God for us. While this is not the only effect, it is certainly a significant one. The writer of Hebrews prefaces our text for today with, ‘Seeing then that we have a great High Priest who has passed through the heavens, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold fast our confession. For we do not have a High Priest who cannot sympathize with our weaknesses, but was in all points tempted as we are, yet without sin.’ The conclusion of what he sets forth serves as our text for today ‘Let us therefore come boldly to the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy and find grace to help in time of need.’ This is a very practical matter regarding prayer. We often come before the Throne of Grace timidly, or fearfully. The writer of Hebrews puts forth the argument that, because Christ is Our High Priest, and is now at the Throne of Grace, well in advance of our arrival, that therefore we should, ‘come boldly.’ Why does God hear my prayers? Does He hear them because I frame my petitions well? Does He hear them because of my fervency, or my persistence? Does He hear them because I am a particular favorite of His? None of these is the prevailing reason as to why God hears us. Christ, His Presence and His Intercession are the reasons God hears us. Jesus never fails. Therefore, we may pray with boldness. Therefore, we may press our petitions with strength and fervency. Therefore, we may continue to bring our most heartfelt desires to the Almighty God. Our boldness is not presumption, but well-founded upon the unfailing Intercession of Christ, Our Great High Priest.
Our Great prayer-answering God,
We come boldly before Your throne today.
We know that You will hear us for Jesus’ Sake.
Answer every prayer for Your Honor and Your Glory.
