I Am The Bread of Life
I Am The Bread of Life
And Jesus said to them, “I am the bread of life. He who comes to Me shall never hunger, and he who believes in Me shall never thirst.
John 6:35
Christ used graphic images to describe Himself. They were also images which were very common to the people to whom He was speaking. He describes Himself as, ‘the Door,’ as ‘the Good Shepherd,’ as, ‘the True Vine,’ and as, ‘the Light of the World.’ In our text for today He describes Himself as, ‘the Bread of Life.’ Let us take a few moments, please, to meditate upon Him under this presentation. Christ used this description of Himself on the day after He had fed the 5,000 men, plus the women and children. This would have evoked thoughts of the events of the day before. As we consider Christ in this way, how does it appeal to us? Christ is bread for us at any and every stage of life. We may feed bread to a small child or an aged person. Christ is, as bread, made of common material. He came robed in the flesh of humanity just as bread comes from common grain. Christ is bread for us in that He is fit for everyday consumption. We may eat bread every day. So we may taste of Christ day after day, and never tire of Him. Christ is satisfying as bread is. We enjoy bread and will, at times, fill ourselves with that alone. So we may completely satisfy ourselves with Christ. These thoughts will perhaps encourage you even today to meditate on things far beyond what we have raised here. Above all, we hope that today you will feast upon Christ, ‘the Bread of Life.’
Our most Gracious and Holy Savior,
we rejoice that You feed us on Your Own Great Self.
We are satisfied with You, O, Bread of Life.
