The Triumph of Submission

The Triumph of Submission

The Triumph of Submission

“Father, if it is Your will, take this cup away from Me; nevertheless not My will, but Yours, be done.”

Luke 22:42

How can I pray sincerely, ‘not my will, but Yours be done,’ when I have definite opinions about what I want the outcome to be? We have considered, for the past two days, Christ’s earnest plea in the Garden of Gethsemane. We have considered His expression of truly human emotions and His tearful, fervent pleading. He sought His Father’s intervention in a matter that pained Him thoroughly. He desired that His Father would spare Him of it. He prayed in submission to the Father’s Will. Herein lay the great victory of Christ’s spirituality. He submitted His Will to the Will of the Father. Here is something of great value for us. Christ knows how to submit His Will to His Father’s Will, therefore, Christ is able to teach that to us. He, the Head, is well able to teach us, the Body. One of the hardest things we ever have to face is to accept the Sovereignty of God in matters where we have definite opinions. We cannot achieve this acceptance by discipline or force of will. Christ alone can teach us how to submit our will to the Will of God. Christ alone can enable us to accept the Sovereignty of God. Christ is a true Leader in every respect. He does not ask us to do that which He Himself cannot do, will not do, or has not done. He will help us where we are utterly unable. He will teach us to pray, ‘not my will, but Yours be done.’

Our most Holy and Wise God,
You have a Perfect Will.
We desire that Your Will should prevail.
Teach us through Christ, what it means to truly submit to Your Will.
