‘I Am The Way’
‘I Am The Way’
Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.
John 14:6
As we consider some of the Self-descriptions of Christ, we come to a watershed description which is utterly definitive. If we are to embrace the faith, ‘once for all delivered to the saints,’ then we must embrace the implications of its’ Foremost Representative. As we consider this text let us begin with Christ’s first statement, ‘I am the Way.’ He uses the definite article, and there can be no misunderstanding of His meaning. Christ declares Himself, by His use of this term, the others which follow it, and His unequivocal statement at the end, to be the Only Way to God. This is a statement which runs very counter to the spirit, not just of this age, but every age. It is, however, a statement which we, if we are to embrace all of what the Bible says and means, must wholeheartedly support. The Apostles embraced it and made it the core of their preaching, ‘Nor is there salvation in any other, for there is no other name under heaven given among men by which we must be saved.’ It is the ground upon which they stood in the face of all opposition, whether of the Jews, who refused to accept Christ as Messiah, or of the pagan Gentiles, who considered Him to be little more than a flash-in-the-pan cult leader. It is the ground upon which the Church of Jesus Christ has stood both in the Old Testament, and throughout the New. It is the ground upon which we ourselves must continue to stand, if we are to take Christ at His Word. ‘I Am the Way.’
Our Gracious and Loving Savior,
we rejoice in You because You are The Way
whereby we may come into the presence of the Holy and Righteous God,
there to remain for all eternity.
