‘He Began To Reign’

‘He Began To Reign’

‘He Began To Reign’

Therefore all the elders of Israel came to the king at Hebron, and King David made a covenant with them at Hebron before the Lord. And they anointed David king over Israel. David was thirty years old when he began to reign, and he reigned forty years.

II Samuel 5:3-4

Our text for today follows several chapters which detail for us the historical incidents which occurred which eventually resulted in David ruling over all of Israel. This was his God-ordained destiny. This was the end purpose for which God had been preparing him through every trial and endeavor. So God orders and arranges all our circumstances to bring us to His desired place for us. It was God’s purpose for David to sit upon the throne of Israel as the pre-figurment of Christ, The King of His People. Christ has a larger purpose for all of us. Each of us, no matter how insignificant we seem to be in our own eyes, or even in the eyes of others, fit into that larger Plan. All the experiences of our life, every interaction with others, every trial, every hardship serves the purpose of fitting and fashioning us into the exact form which will make us most useful to Him in the place of His Appointment. Along with that, there is the fact that He is also, by all these things, conforming us to the Image of Christ. By conforming us to His Image, He makes us useful in pointing others to Christ. So God did to David, and so, in different ways, He does to us. He has formed us for His Glory, and uses us as He sees fit. This is our highest value. This is our greatest good.

Our Wise and Sovereign God,
We praise You, that You have an unwavering Plan.
We rejoice that You will bring us to the appointed place You have for us,
in Your appointed time.
