Empowered For A Great Work

But you shall receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you shall be witnesses to Me in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth.”

Acts 1:8

As Christ was about to ascend to Heaven from the Mount of Olives, He had important statements to make to the disciples regarding what was coming next for them. He delivered them from the idea which they had that He would restore the kingdom of Israel. He goes on, in what has become our text for today, to lay out their future collective work. We want to meditate upon that work for awhile, because it has value for us. First, let us consider that this work would be a work for which Christ would empower them. Second, let us consider that this would be a work which would begin at home. Third, let us consider that this work would extend far beyond any success of which they could conceive. These things are true for us. Christ has given us a work to do for Him for which He will empower us. The work which He has given us, must of necessity, begin at home. We begin our ministry to others of pointing them to Christ at home. It begins in our ‘Jerusalem.’ The work of pointing people to Christ extends beyond our home territory to the ‘Judea’ which surrounds it, to the ‘Samaria’ beyond it, and even to the end of the earth.’ Christ empowers us to do this work and extends the success of it far beyond anything of which we can conceive. Today, let us dwell upon where we fit into this Grand Scheme of which Christ speaks. We are His witnesses, and He will empower us to do this great work.

Our All-Powerful God,
we praise You that You have a great work for us to do.
We rejoice that You will empower us to accomplish
all that will bring You glory.
