A Statement of Fact
A Statement of Fact
‘…Hallowed be thy name.‘
Matthew 6:9b
As Christ taught His disciples to pray, He led them upon a course of sound theology which is the basis for sound praying. To that end He summarizes, in the first statement, that which is at once a statement of fact, a statement of praise and a statement of desire. We want to consider each of these in turn. Today, we consider it as a statement of fact. ‘Hallowed be Your Name,’ is an unvarnished fact. God’s Name is Holy, because He is Holy. His Name is the declaration of His Divine Character. For us to address Him so, is to simply articulate Who and What He is. If we lay hold upon this truth of the Holiness of God, as reflected by His Name, we will approach Him with a true sense of awe and genuine reverence. It is interesting for us to note that an understanding of the Holiness of the Name of God will lead us to value Christ. In Psalm 138:2 we read, ‘For You have magnified Your Word above all your Name.’ Christ is the Living Word of God. If God would have us to regard His Name as Holy, how much more does He desire that we value His Living Word, which He has ‘magnified above all (His) Name?’ When we approach the Throne of Grace in prayer, we are approaching the Most Holy One on the basis of the merits of the One He prizes most. This is that Christ, Who has taught us to make our petitions to, ‘Our Father in heaven,’ with the full understanding that, ‘Hallowed be Your name.’
Our Father Who is in heaven,
we rejoice that Your Name is Holy
and that it is a reflection of Your Character.
We praise You, that You have given us the privilege
of approaching You and knowing that You will hear us.
