‘Because…Of Him’

Because that by reason of him many of the Jews went away, and believed on Jesus.

John 12:11

We considered yesterday how Lazarus was a living testimony to the Person and Work of Christ. As such, he became the target of Christ’s enemies. What was the positive effect of the resurrection of Lazarus? We have it before us in our text for today, ‘Because that by reason of him many of the Jews went away, and believed on Jesus.’ This is the effect of the transforming Power of Christ. When Christ has done such a miracle as to raise one from the dead, it has a salutary effect upon those who take it to heart. This is a story which recurs throughout the course of human history. Christ does a remarkable work of Grace in the life of some particular individual. For all intents and purposes, He raises that one from the dead. The overall effect of this ‘resurrection’ is so powerful that those who have seen the transformation begin to inquire as to the reason for the change. As the testimony of the Saving Grace of Christ goes forth, many believe in Jesus. So Christ builds His Church, ‘and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it.’ Christ is yet performing the miracle of raising the spiritually dead to life. He will not cease His miraculous, life-giving work until ‘all the ransomed Church of God be saved to sin no more.’ This is our Christ. This is His Work. These are His people, saved by Free and Sovereign Grace. ‘To God be the glory; great things He has done.’

Our Wise and Wonderful Savior,
we rejoice that You will accomplish all Your Will,
in all things, for all time and for all eternity.
We praise You, that You will gather together,
all of Your people, that they may be one, as You have said.
