Destroying the Evidence

But the chief priests consulted that they might put Lazarus also to death….

John 12:10

Lazarus was a testimony to the Person and Work of Christ. His very existence, as a living being, raised by the Power of Sovereign Grace, bore witness to the identity of Christ as the Son of God. That being said, Lazarus was a burr under the saddle of the Chief Priests who had become the sworn enemies of Christ because He had cleansed the Temple and interrupted their cash flow. They plotted to put Christ to death, and ‘plotted to put Lazarus to death also.’ If we want to understand Christ, and the effect He has upon depraved humanity, this is a good situation to consider. Depraved humanity, especially of the hypocritically religious variety, will do anything and everything to destroy the evidence of the Work of Christ. This demonstrates the inveterate hardness of the human heart. Even in the face of the resurrection of the dead, they will refuse to believe and do everything possible to make all the evidence disappear. If we understand this, we will magnify the Grace of God and the Glory of Christ. Christ’s work will stand regardless of all who seek to destroy the evidence of it. When all of these enemies of Christ have perished, Christ, His people, and His Kingdom will still stand. ‘For He must reign till He has put all enemies under His feet.’ In spite of all who stand against Him, Christ will prevail, and be ‘King of Kings, and Lord of Lords.’

Our All-Conquering Savior,
we rejoice that no one can erase the evidence of Your Work.
We praise You that what You have done,
is well done, and shall stand forever.
