‘Show Me’

Shew me thy ways, O LORD; teach me thy paths.

Psalm 25:4

We have been meditating upon Psalm 51 for quite some time. Today we arrive at a different Psalm, penned during an earlier time in David’s spiritual experience. During these days, David was walking closely with the Lord. This was when his love for God was in bloom. Our text today reflects David’s love and desire to know God intimately. He petitions, ‘Shew me thy ways, O LORD; teach me thy paths.’ David understood that in order for him to gain a thorough knowledge of God, God would have to do the ‘showing’ and the ‘teaching.’ In practical terms, this would lead David to look to Christ. The types and shadows of the Old Testament, as they revealed the ‘ways’ and ‘paths’ of God, all pointed to the Person and Work of Christ. He is the Great Revealer of the ‘ways’ and ‘paths’ of God. These basic concepts are just the same for us. We have a heart for God. He has granted unto us regeneration, repentance, and faith. We want Him to show us His ways and teach us His paths. How will He do that? He will do it by showing us Christ. Christ is what we are able to see of God. He is ‘the express image of His Person.’ To Philip, Christ said, ‘He who has seen me has seen the Father.’ To this end, we seek to see and know more of Christ. He is our True North. To Him we have looked, thus far, for our souls salvation. To Him we look to show us the Character and work of God. To His Image the Holy Spirit is conforming us in sanctifying work. There is never a time in our earthly journey that is not a good time to pray, ‘Shew me thy ways, O LORD; teach me thy paths.’ This prayer is the demonstration of our heart’s desire to know more of Christ. God answered David’s petition. He will answer ours as well.

Our Wise and Wonderful God,
we praise You that You have a vast store of revelation
which You intend to show us in due course of time.
We rejoice that day by day, as we learn of Christ,
we gain insights into this store of knowledge.
