‘Jesus…Caught Him’
‘Jesus…Caught Him’
And immediately Jesus stretched forth his hand, and caught him, and said unto him, O you of little faith, why did you doubt?
Matthew 14:31
When the circumstances of life overwhelm us, Christ comes to our rescue. Our text reveals a perfect example of this. When Peter saw that ‘the wind was boisterous he was afraid and beginning to sink he cried out, saying, ‘Lord, save me.’ Christ was right there at the critical moment. ‘And immediately Jesus stretched forth his hand, and caught him, and said unto him, O you of little faith, why did you doubt?’’ What is interesting for us to note is that Christ only makes one remark, ‘O you of little faith, why did you doubt?’ What we ought to consider is that Matthew, who wrote this account, was nowhere near the two between whom this conversation occurred. He would only have known what Christ said to Peter if one of them told him. The logical source for that information is Peter. That leads us to conclude that Peter was not shy about what had transpired, even though it cast him in a less than stellar light. Peter was being honest about his own weakness of faith. It is even so with us. Circumstances overwhelm us, and when they do, Christ is there to rescue us. What passes between His mouth and our ear is very personal and instructive. Very often, Christ means it for our ears alone. We may pass the story along to others for their edification, which will help them to grow in grace, and have more confidence in Christ. Our experiences become the foundation for our pointing others to Christ. He has rescued us when the circumstances overwhelmed us. We know that He will do the same for them.
Our Kind and Compassionate Savior,
We rejoice that You reach forth Your Hand
unto us when we are sinking.
We praise You that You raise us up to walk
upon the stormy seas with You.
