‘His Government’

‘His Government’

‘His Government’

For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon His shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counselor, the Mighty God, the Everlasting Father, the Prince of Peace. Of the increase of his government and peace there shall be no end….
Isaiah 9:6&7

We want good leadership. The world is crying out for it. Everywhere we look we see the effects of poor or even evil leadership. The old proverb has come to pass, ‘The good will not run, and the bad will not quit.’ We have considered for the past days the gift of Christ which God has given us. We have seen Him as the sum of all possible perfections. This leads us to the role of Christ, not just as Savior, but also as King. Isaiah introduces this idea in verse 6 when he says, ‘and the government will be upon His shoulder.’ He goes on to expand the idea in verse 7. Here is leadership we can admire. Here is a King we can love and serve without reservation. Here is the King, Who is, in character, word, and deed the King of Kings. God has sent us Christ first, as the Child and the Son. In human terms, He has grown up before our eyes. He has completed the days of His humiliation, and progressed onward to His day of exaltation. So, now, ‘…God also hath highly exalted him, and given him a name which is above every name: That at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of things in heaven, and things in earth, and things under the earth; And that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.’ The Child of Bethlehem is now recognizable as the King of Glory. He has the rule which is His by Divine Right. ‘Of the increase of His government and peace there will be no end.’ The rulership of Christ is the end result of all that has gone before. Here is the leadership of which all the world is so badly in need. We look past the leadership we have to the Leadership which rises above them. It is ‘His government.’

High King of Heaven,
we rejoice that You rule and reign over all.
We praise You that we are Your willing servants,
and follow the King, wherever He goes.
