The Fullness of Him

And hath put all things under his feet, and gave him to be the head over all things to the church, which is his body, the fullness of him that filleth all in all.
Ephesians 1:22-23
It is Christ Who makes His people who and what they are. Apart from Christ we are essentially nothing. Our text makes this point more positively when it says that God has given Christ ‘to be head over all things to the church, which is, the fullness of Him who fills all in all.’ If we define the church as all the redeemed of all ages, and our text says that the church is ‘the fullness of Him,’ then we conclude that all our spiritual substance is the result of Christ filling us. Our text goes on to say that Christ ‘fills all in all.’ From this we conclude that Christ fills all of His people in every way He deems fit. This means that every spiritual grace we possess, every virtue we exhibit, every evidence of spiritual fullness which manifests itself for our own observation and that of anyone else, is because of Christ, ‘who fills all in all.’ Whatever evidence of true spiritual fullness there is in us is the work of Christ by His Spirit ‘who renews us in the whole man after the image of God, and enables us to die more and more unto sin, and to live unto righteousness.’ We give glory to God through Christ for our salvation, and also for our evidences which He has wrought in us. To God be the glory; Christ ‘fills all in all.’
Our Great God and Our Savior,
we rejoice in the great work which Christ is doing in our lives.
We praise You that You will perfect that which concerns us
and make us wholly like Christ.
