Head Over All

Head Over All

And hath put all things under his feet, and gave him to be the head over all things to the church, which is his body, the fullness of him that filleth all in all.

Ephesians 1:22-23

Christ’s relationship with His people stands in stark contrast to those things which are ‘under His feet.’  Our text for today declares that God has made Him ‘to be head over all things to the church which is His body.’  The Church is all of the redeemed of all ages.  It is not the church of any particular denomination. The Church of Jesus Christ is His people of whom He is the Head.  As our text describes, they are His Body.  According to the analogy, this is an indissoluble union.  This reflects a far different relationship than the earlier portion of the text which describes His relationship with His enemies.  If we use the analogy of the Head and the Body, we consider that the state of the Body is of great concern to the Head.  The Head will do all that is necessary to care for it, feed it, clothe it, and attend to any deficiency or injury.  The Head will preserve the Body and there is no place where the Head is that the Body will not be.  This and more, indicates to us the care which Christ has for us.  We can multiply in our minds the ways in which Christ, Who is ‘Head over all’ treats us as His Body.  This relationship surpasses all others.  It means all the world to us and makes heaven truly glorious.

O Christ, our Living Head,
we rejoice at this union that we have with You.
We praise You that we shall never be separated from You,
in time or in eternity.
