To Walk Worthy

To Walk Worthy

I therefore, the prisoner of the Lord, beseech you that ye walk worthy of the vocation wherewith ye are called.

Ephesians 4:1

Understanding what it means to be in Christ will have a practical effect on how we live.  For three chapters, Paul has been expounding what it means to be in Christ.  He now turns to the practical application of all that has gone before.  All that follows after this will rest upon the foundation of what it means to be chosen in Christ, predestinated unto the adoption of children, redeemed, effectually called, indwelt by the Holy Spirit and every other doctrine which Paul discussed in the first portion of his epistle.  Now he ‘beseeches’ the Ephesians that they ‘walk worthy of the calling with which you were called.’  This will involve a lifetime of looking to Christ.  It will involve a lifetime of the Holy Spirit ‘renewing us in the whole person after the image of God and enabling us to die more and more unto sin and to live unto righteousness.’  We want to understand that every successful effort in our growth in grace is due to the ongoing work of God to enable us to ‘walk worthy of the calling with which you are called.’  This enables us to ‘so run that you may obtain.’  Our success in spiritual walking is guaranteed because it is Christ by His Spirit Who takes us every step of the way.

Our Holy and Wise God,
we rejoice that in our spiritual growth,
You have ordained both the ways and the means.
We praise You, that You will enable us daily,
to grow in grace and in conformity
 to Jesus Christ our Savior.
