What Is This Fullness?

And to know the love of Christ, which passeth knowledge, that ye might be filled with all the fullness of God.
Ephesians 3:19
What is this fullness of which Paul is speaking and for which he is praying for his spiritual children? To summarize it as simply as possible, it is the completeness of all that God intends for us to have and be in Christ. This includes the work of the Spirit to strengthen us; Christ dwelling in our hearts by faith; being rooted and grounded in love; comprehending and knowing the love of Christ, which all combine to complete this fullness. The end result is a mature believer who ultimately demonstrates the fruit of the Spirit: love, joy, peace, longsuffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control. These characteristics are what bring us to look very much like Christ, Who has the Holy Spirit without measure. The end goal of all that God is doing in us is to make us like Christ. The fulfillment of that goal is when ‘we shall be like Him, for we shall see Him as He is.’ This fullness is not just for a few of the ‘super-saints,’ but is what God intends for every person whom He saves by Free and Sovereign Grace. It is good for us to know where God is taking us in our spiritual journey. We shall safely arrive at our Father’s house in the condition He intends for us to be, ‘filled with all the fullness of God.’
Our Holy, Wise and Wonderful God,
we rejoice that You have an abundance of gifts for us.
We praise You that in Christ,
by the power of the Holy Spirit,
we shall arrive exactly where You want us to be,
with all the fullness that You intend for us to have.
