Christ And Him Crucified

For I determined not to know any thing among you, save Jesus Christ and him crucified.
I Corinthians 2:2
The Apostle Paul was a man of one mission, one message, and one purpose. It was not because he was narrow or incapable of other things. He was well-versed in the Old Testament, had sat at the feet of learned men, was intellectually capable and theologically informed. He was a practical man as well, being able to work with his hands as a tent-maker. Therefore, why would Paul confine himself to one message, ‘Jesus Christ and Him crucified?’ Paul understood that this is God’s premier message. If ‘to Him give all the prophets witness,’ and the Scriptures are ‘they which testify of Christ,’ then every other message is of at best, secondary importance. The message of all the Old Testament, of the Evangelists, and of the Apostles is the Person and Work of Christ. Christ said as much to the disciples on the Mount of Olives before His ascension. He said, ‘You shall be witnesses to Me.’ Although Paul had not been there on that occasion, he had gotten the message. Paul’s message has become our message. We are the inheritors of the commission to declare, ‘Jesus Christ and Him crucified.’ No other message supersedes this One. Thus, we determine ‘not to know any thing except, Jesus Christ and Him crucified.’
Our Gracious Master and our God,
we rejoice that You have given unto us the great privilege,
of making You known.
We praise You that we can follow those
who have, in their day, made much of You.
