The Means Of Our Peace

Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God; and the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus. 

Philippians 4:6-7 

We highly prize peace. No one really wants to exist in a state of constant internal turmoil. Circumstances and events, past, present, or even future, may contribute to this. The disciples, in the midst of a violent storm on the Sea of Galilee were so upset they cried out to Christ, ‘Master, do you not care that we perish?’ This is a single instance, but the Scripture abounds with them. Hagar in the wilderness without water; David being hunted by Saul; and Job enduring a prolonged affliction, all expressed distress regarding their situation. The Scripture points to Christ as the answer to every distressing circumstance and condition of life. If creation began with Christ because, ‘in the beginning was the Word,’ then as we come to a discussion of the peace of God, we should begin with Christ. He is the means of our peace. The peace of God which garrisons our hearts and minds does not come apart from Christ. Christ is the means by Whom we receive it. Before we begin a discussion about any other portion of this text let us look first to Christ by whom we have the peace of God. 

Our Glorious Living Christ, 
we rejoice that You give us peace. 
We praise You that we have the privilege 
to begin all our considerations with You.
