Free

For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus has made me free from the law of sin and death. For what the law could not do in that it was weak through the flesh, God did by sending His own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh, on account of sin: He condemned sin in the flesh, that the righteous requirement of the law might be fulfilled in us who do not walk according to the flesh but according to the Spirit.
Romans 8:2-4
Being in Christ means we are free. This freedom specifically applies to the law of sin and death to which we were enslaved as long as we were out of Christ. The Holy Spirit has done a work of grace within us. That work has involved regeneration, repentance, and faith. It has changed us from being dead in trespasses and sins to being alive in Christ. Whereas sin was the rule for us, rather than the exception, now it is not so. Whereas we were spiritually dead and headed for the second death, now we are spiritually alive and have the abundant life Christ came to give us. We could never keep the law because of the weakness of our flesh. Christ obeyed the law perfectly as a true human and thus condemned sin. He satisfied all the demands of the law in precept. Our life as we live in imitation of Christ by walking in the Spirit is the demonstration of the success of Christ’s work. It is evidence of the success of the Holy Spirit’s work. He has taken the things of Christ and shown them to us. He has given us the desire to follow Christ and to imitate Him. He has planted fruit in us and is cultivating it until we resemble Christ. This elevates us in everyday life to walking according to the Spirit. The Son has made us free, and we are free indeed.
Our Great God and our Savior,
we rejoice that You have made us free from the law of sin and death.
We praise You that the Holy Spirit leads us
to walk in Your ways.
