Grace Abounding

Moreover the law entered that the offense might abound. But where sin abounded, grace abounded much more.
Romans 5:20
The grace of God is greater than the abundance of our sin. This is a truth that once we have understand it, colors all our perceptions forever. We are clear about our sin and our sinfulness. We are sinful enough by ourselves and there is a host of humanity who is with us. Therefore, the sins of our race, the human race, rise like mountains before us. They are mountains we cannot move, nor can any human effort shift them. Left alone without grace we are individually and collectively doomed. The grace of God is the only thing that will overcome this ruin. What is overwhelming is that it has. God’s grace appears in all its’ abundance in the Person and work of Christ. As Paul says, ‘But when the fullness of the time had come, God sent forth His Son, born of a woman, born under the law, to redeem those who were under the law, that we might receive the adoption as sons.’ The passage from which our text derives reveals to us the grace of God and His demonstration of love, ‘but God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were still sinners Christ died for us.’ Our sin is great, but God’s grace is far greater. Christ is the living embodiment of it. His work is the highest expression of it. We rejoice in this abundant grace. It is grace enough for all and affects all whom God has given Christ. It is grace worth having and grace worth proclaiming. Christ is at the center of it. This is the message that God’s grace is greater than our sin.
Great God of Wonders,
we rejoice at Your abundant grace.
We praise You that it is greater
than all our sin.
