Christ’s Words

Christ’s Words

Heaven and earth will pass away, but My words will by no means pass away.

Mark 13:31

Christ is the embodiment of truth and speaks the truth. The context of our text is His discourse on the end of the age. He is quite specific about what it will entail. He speaks of nation rising against nation, kingdom against kingdom, earthquakes, famines, and trouble in various places. He is blunt about the persecution believers will face. He articulates the conditions which will occur in the Great Tribulation. At the end of His graphic description, He declares, ‘Then they will see the Son of Man coming in the clouds with great power and glory.’ He goes on to speak of how His angels will gather His elect together. His next remark points to the signs that evidence the fulfillment of all His prophecies. In the verse that precedes our text He says, ‘Assuredly, I say to you, this generation will by no means pass away till all these things take place.’ Our text sets His seal upon all that precedes it. What shall we draw from all this? We ought certainly to draw from it that Christ knows the end from the beginning. We ought also to consider that time is hastening on, and the world is heading for a definitive conclusion. We ought also to recognize that Jesus is going to return in a plain and unmistakable way. Beyond that, He maintains control over all that occurs in the course of history. Above all, we should believe what He says. His words shall not pass away. In the midst of a changing world, He is the unchanging Christ.

Our Gracious God and our Savior,
we rejoice that You are the truth.
We praise You that by Your Spirit
You guide us into all truth.
