Have You Seen Him?

By night on my bed I sought the one I love; I sought him, but I did not find him. I will rise now, I said, And go about the city; In the streets and in the squares I will seek the one I love. I sought him, but I did not find him. The watchmen who go about the city found me;
I said, Have you seen the one I love?

Song of Solomon 3:1-3

Lovers cannot bear being apart for very long. In our text the Bride is speaking. She describes her seeking of her lover. When she realizes He is not there she rises and goes forth to seek Him. She searches the city diligently to find Him. As she does, she encounters the watchmen who guarded the town by night. She enquires of them, ‘Have you seen the one I love?’ Solomon sets forth in poetry the manner in which those who love Christ seek Him. They desire to see, hear, and embrace Him. They search diligently to find where He is. They ask others if they have seen Him. This describes the heart attitude and approach of all who are truly wed to Christ. It also accounts for how they will seek Him in worship. Sadly, there are many gatherings where Christ is not preeminent. They may advertise as houses of worship but there is scant reference to Him in general, and particularly in the preaching. Whole messages go forth with almost no mention of Him. This will not satisfy those who are seeking Christ. They will move on until they encounter those who will consistently preach Christ and Him crucified. For the Bride, He is the One Who matters most. He is the One Whom we desire. Therefore, we will continue to seek Him until we have found Him. Our cry is, ‘Have you seen the one I love?’
