Glimpses Of Christ

The voice of my beloved! Behold, he comes leaping upon the mountains, skipping upon the hills. My beloved is like a gazelle or a young stag. Behold, he stands behind our wall; He is looking through  the windows, gazing through the lattice.

Song of Solomon 2:8-9

Lovers love to be together. When they are apart, they long for reunion. The Bride is speaking in our text of her Beloved returning to her. She hears his voice and knows He is on His way. He moves toward her as a gazelle or young stag with grace and speed. She remarks that He is looking through the windows and gazing through the lattice. Because He is, she can see Him in glimpses, partially revealed, and partially concealed. She is anticipating the fulness of His presence. This is a deliberately detailed picture that describes the people of God waiting for Christ. The more didactic passages of the New Testament that refer to Christ as the Bridegroom and His redeemed as the Bride clearly make this depiction. Thus, the people of God eagerly await their reunion with Christ. Our text describes the glimpses she has of her Beloved. We also have glimpses of Christ. We see Him in the Old Testament in the Christophanies. We behold Him in the types and shadows. We see more of Him in the New Testament. In the gospels we behold Him as King, the Servant of Jehovah, the Son of man, and the Son of God. Revelation reveals Him more thoroughly. We have the added benefit that the Holy Spirit continues to take the things of Christ and show them to us. We also look forward to the day when the faith shall be sight. We want more than just glimpses. We want to see Christ in His glory.

Our Gracious God and our Savior,
we rejoice in what You have shown us of Yourself.
We look forward to the day
when we shall see You in all Your glory.
