The Remnant

The Remnant

The Lord has removed men far away, and the forsaken places are many in the midst of the land.

Isaiah 6:12

God ends Isaiah’s commission by giving him hope. Having told him his message would not be well received and that he would be preaching until no one was left to hear, God gives a glimmer of light to Isaiah. He says there will still be a remnant in the land. It will be, admittedly, a small percentage, ‘a tenth’ but it will still exist. It will be the small group, ‘the stump,’ out of which Israel will return to life and vitality. Even when there is a spiritual decline and things look bleak for the people of God, He still does not forsake those who are His. This is good for us to know collectively as believers in Christ. There are times in the history of the spiritual life of the Body of Christ when we are not doing well. We may live in a time of spiritual decline. The state of the church may not be healthy. Even personally, we may go through barren times when we are not what we were spiritually. What we can and should remember is that God is faithful even when we are not. Jesus never fails. He is still the good shepherd Who knows His Own. He will not leave us or forsake us. When we have fallen, He will raise us up He will continue to lead us aright.

Great God of Wonders,
we rejoice that You are ever faithful.
We praise You that, even in the worst of times,
You give us hope.
