The Throne In The Temple

The Throne In The Temple

In the year that King Uzziah died, I saw the Lord sitting on a throne, high and lifted up, and the train of His robe filled the temple.

Isaiah 6:1

Christ is the only Mediator between God and us. The mediatorial office has three functions, Prophet, Priest, and King. Isaiah’s sight of Christ is of Him as King, sitting upon the throne, high and lifted up. It is worthy of consideration that the throne is in the temple. The temple was the peculiar habitation of the priests. It is interesting to note that Uzziah’s peculiar transgression was to interpose himself, the king, into the province of the priests. Isaiah sees the only King Who has the right to be in the temple. We may add to that, John’s sight of Christ as the sacrificed Lamb in the midst of the throne, surrounded by the elders. He is the perfect Priest offering Himself as the once-for-all sacrifice. Every sight of Christ, we have in His exalted state, confirms to us the central role He occupies to bring us to God. Isaiah paints the picture for us of the King Who reigns from the Holy Place. This magnifies Christ before our eyes. This combines two of the highest offices. If we add to it that He is the Prophet Who as the living Word of God speaks truth to us, and is the embodiment of truth, we understand why He is above all, and rightly so. Our theology must be Christocentric, not because we have made it so, but because God has. Christ is all.

Glorious Living God,
we rejoice that You have exalted Christ.
We praise You that we see Him
lifted up forever.
