Lead Me To The Rock

Hear my cry, O God; attend to my prayer. From the end of the earth I will cry to You, when my heart is overwhelmed; lead me to the rock that is higher than I.
Psalm 61:1-2
What do we do when our heart is overwhelmed? David looked to Christ. Our text is the opening verses of one of his psalms. David’s life was full of truly terrifying moments. From the lions and bears of his youth to the bitter enemies of his old age there was always someone who was seeking to do him harm. Besides that, he had his own shortcomings and failures of faith which haunted him. Thus, many circumstances of his life conspired to bring him to the end of the earth with an overwhelmed heart. He knew he was not sufficient for these things. He was fully aware that in and of himself he would falter, fail, and fall. What was his recourse? It was Christ the Rock. Scripture describes Christ as the Rock of Israel’s wilderness wanderings. He is Daniel’s stone made without hands. He is Paul’s chief cornerstone. Therefore, it is entirely appropriate for us to see Christ here. The song of the saints has been, ‘On Christ the solid rock I stand. All other ground is sinking sand.’ He is the foundation of our life, our hope for the future, and our very present help in time of need. Others may scoff at us for having faith in such a person as Christ, but they cannot destroy the Rock upon Whom we are standing. When all around our soul gives way, He then is all our hope and stay. He is the Rock, higher than we are.
Great God of Wonders,
we rejoice that You are the foundation upon which we stand.
We praise You that You are our hope
when all else fails.
