Power Belongs To God

God has spoken once, twice I have heard this: That power belongs to God. Also to You, O Lord, belongs mercy; for You render to each one according to his work.
Psalm 62:11-12
God rules and Christ reigns. The Scripture teaches us, from beginning to end, that God is Sovereign. He has all power and gives power to whom He will. He also diminishes their power and brings it to an end according to His Own plan. All people of power exist at His good pleasure. He raises up kings and puts them down. At times these people oppose or mistreat the people of God. The redeemed person may endure the persecution of the unrighteous person of power. What is their recourse when they encounter such treatment? David provides an answer. Essentially His answer is to look to Christ. This psalm uses evangelical language. It begins, ‘Truly my soul silently waits for God; from Him comes my salvation. He only is my rock and my salvation; He is my defense; I shall not be greatly moved.’ He speaks of God as, ‘the rock of my strength.’ He speaks of Him as his salvation. These are all terms applied to Christ directly in other portions of Scripture. What do we draw from this practically? We are not our own saviors. We do not adopt the way of the wicked to combat their evil. God gives power and takes it away. Therefore, we look to Him to do judgment and justice in His time and according to His purpose. David resorted to Christ as His salvation, his Rock, and his Refuge. He dealt with the evildoers of David’s day. He will deal with the evildoers in our day.
Our Righteous and Almighty God,
we rejoice that You control all affairs.
We praise You that You
are the great Refuge of Your people.
