Leaning Upon Her Beloved

Leaning Upon Her Beloved

Who is this coming up from the wilderness, leaning upon her beloved?

Song of Solomon 8:5a

Christ upholds us in all our ways. Our text is another speech by someone other than the Bride or Bridegroom. Again, the person speaking is an observer of the two. The question is in regard to the Bride. Her stunning transformation has rendered her so glorious she is almost unrecognizable from her former self. She comes up from the wilderness and as she does, she is, ‘leaning upon her beloved.’ He is supporting her lest she stumble on the rocky path up from the wilderness. This is a beautiful picture of what Christ does for us. He has sought us as we were far off in the wilderness. He has set His love upon us. His love relationship with us has transformed us into a version of ourselves which is barely recognizable in contrast to our former selves. We are still dependent upon Him. As we come up from the wilderness toward the eternal city we do so, leaning upon our Beloved. Apart from Him we would still be as we were. He has made all the difference in who and what we have become. We shall continue to lean upon Him all the way to the heavenly city. While we may marvel at the change in ourselves, and others may be astonished at the transformation we know that He is the reason for it all. To God be the glory, great things He has done.

High King of heaven,
we rejoice that You have condescended unto us.
We praise You that we can depend upon You,
every step of our pilgrim pathway.
