Who Else But You?

Who Else But You?

Whom have I in heaven but You? And there is none upon earth that I desire besides You. My flesh and my heart fail; But God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever.

Psalm 73:25-26

When we find that God is all we need, we have come to a place of wisdom. Asaph had some hard questions. He was trying to come to grips with the fact that wicked people prospered. He is quite explicit about how he perceives them. ‘For there are no pangs in their death, but their strength is firm.  They are not in trouble as other men, nor are they plagued like other men. Therefore, pride serves as their necklace; violence covers them like a garment. Their eyes bulge with abundance; they have more than heart could wish.’ He goes so far as to express his opinion that he has wasted his time in being a holy man. He was reluctant to articulate his feelings lest he harm other believers. When he went into the house of God to worship, God gave him a spiritual understanding of why He does as He does. This was both satisfying to him and humbling. Our text is one of the most captivating, and memorable remarks in Scripture. God was all Asaph had in heaven and earth. He was all he desired. Even though Asaph was a faltering, failing person, God was His strength and his portion. We have this God in Christ. We also may struggle with deep and hard questions. We may feel that we have wasted our time in doing right and following Christ. Yet when He brings us to see clearly Who He is and what He is doing, we find our satisfaction in Him. Asaph’s experience is our experience as we gain a truly spiritual understanding of the Person and work of Christ.

Our Glorious Living God,
we rejoice that You meet us at our every point of need.
We praise You that You satisfy us in every way.
